Intended Participants

This course is suitable for those who have some experience with records management and need to understand the principles and practices behind the formal and legal retention and disposal of records. It is aimed primarily at participants from the public and local authority sectors.

This course focuses on providing insight and understanding about the core principles and practices associated with the retention and disposal of records in both hard-copy and electronic formats.

  • Why we need to dispose of records
  • Appraisal theory and concepts
  • Developing a retention and disposal schedule
  • Interpreting and implementing a retention and disposal schedule
  • Using the Archives New Zealand General Disposal Authorities

  • What records disposal is and how efficient disposal can benefit the organisation
  • The terminology associated with retention and disposal
  • The core theories surrounding records appraisal
  • The steps to the development of a retention and disposal schedule
  • How to interpret and implement an existing retention and disposal schedule including:
    • How to sentence hard-copy records
    • Considerations for the implementation of records disposal to electronic records
    • How to apply the Archives New Zealand General Disposal Authorities to hard-copy and electronic records
  •  What archives are and Archives New Zealand’s role regarding records retention and disposal
