This course is suitable for:- those new to records management,
- those in roles such a corporate administration, management of records staff,
- librarians who wish to learn more about the basics of recordkeeping.
Course Overview
This practical course is an introduction to the wide range of approaches to recordkeeping and records management practices for both hard-copy and electronic records. It is at an introductory level and focuses on providing an understanding of core concepts and the tools and practices associated with good recordkeeping. Topics covered include:- Defining records and recordkeeping
- Core recordkeeping concepts
- Putting the concepts into practice with:
- Record creation
- File classification structures
- Physical management of hard-copy records
- Management of electronic records
- Management of non-current records
- Records appraisal
- Retention and disposal schedules
- Meeting recordkeeping standards
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course attendees will have an understanding of:- What is a record and how good recordkeeping can benefit their organisations
- The records life-cycle and continuum models
- How records are created and captured within organisations
- Categorising and controlling records through use of file classification structures
- Common tools and processes to manage hard-copy records
- Common tools and processes to manage electronic records
- Managing non-current records
- Appraisal and retention and disposal of records
- The Public Records Act 2005 and the role of Archives New Zealand
